Master and Commander

1. Explain two ways the characters and/or events in the extract fit the action adventure genre. [10]

The events fit the action adventure genre because it involves weapons; when a film uses weapons of some sort it is almost guaranteed that it is action adventure. In the clip it is very obvious that there is some sort of war going on, it includes bombs going off hitting different ships as there is a war between them both. This causes concern to the rest of the crew on board the ship who are attacking back. There is a lot of panic and distress as bombs are go off in all directions this shows the genre because there is a lot of action and running which causes noise from everywhere making it a action scene.

The Hurt Locker

Explain two ways the characters and/ or events fit the action adventure genre.

The events fit the action adventure genre because it involves weapons; when a film uses weapons of some sort it is almost guaranteed that it is action adventure. In the clip it is very obvious that there is some sort of war going on, it includes a bomb strapped to a man (a suicide bomber) who is very panicked and distressed. This causes concern to the rest on the army troops who are trying to deactivate the bomb. There is a lot of panic and worry as a bomb is going to go off this shows the genre because there is a lot of action and running which causes noise from everywhere making it a action scene.

The soundtrack is notably used to create effects for the audience which fit the genre. There isn’t any sound just dialog and background noise of panic and shouting which aims to create tension which will be subverted by the inevitable convergence of characters. Shouting sounds are also used to create the effect of panic with lots of movement which creates action as the audience recognizes the cliché́. In addition, it also serves to imply there is an upcoming bomb scene where the characters will be in distress running away, reminiscent of action films.
Editing is also utilized in different manners to create effects which help to heighten the action. For example, editing is very slow-paced at first to create a tense atmosphere which again hints at an upcoming convergence.

The editing then speeds up, and cross-cutting is used frequently to help to bring together the characters in a panic discussion scene and the fast editing builds-up to the action, heightening tension. During trying to deactivate the bomb shot editing is used to show the conflicting emotions of antagonist and protagonists, and discontinuous editing is used to mimic the chaos of the situation.

Mise-en-scène is predominantly utilised at the start of the extract, with all the army men gathered around with guns. In addition, all the army men have a distinctive costume, to make them stand-out to the audience.
The conventional set-design of a deserted town creates the effect of danger when the tranquillity is displaced for action, as it is unexpected to the audience.
The props also mainly consist of weapons, providing a catalyst for action, which also creates terror by satinsing the genre through having excessive amounts of weapons. Lighting is natural simply to create the effect of realism in the town.

Camera devices are extensively used to connote ideals and create effects. For example, a high-angle shot is used to show their obedience and how much panic and horror there is. In addition, many mid-shots and close-up shots are utilised before the action to portray the characters’ fear. An establishing shot is also utilised near the start to depict the quiet suburbia, which is then displaced when the action begins. During the conflict, a handheld camera is employed when they try to deactivate the bomb to mimic the chaos and disorientation the bomb creates. In addition a focus pull is used to bring the armed suicide bomber into focus, and similarly the camera zooms in to the main army man who is in charge of deactivating the bomb, both establish the character importance.

Discuss the ways in which people are represented in the extract.

The army men are represented in the extract as very serious trying their best to deactivate the bomb and get everyone to safety, there is a small amount of panic as nobody knows what’s going to happen but as stereo-typically the army men try and keep panic minimum and reassure it will be okay. The suicide bomber is portrayed as a bad person but in actual fact he isn’t he just got caught up in it all. This is stereo-typical because nowadays we assume that anyone who speaks the language of the enemy has the same skin colour or wears something that represents that religion, they are bad which is completely wrong and unfair. It’s not the innocent peoples fault that their culture and way of life is seen bad because of some minority bad people who put in a bad name.

Explain how each of the following is used to create effect

The soundtrack is used to create effects for the audience which fit the genre. War sounds are used to create the effect of action as the audience recognizes the cliché́. In addition, it implies there is an upcoming battle scene where the characters will fight; this is called a synchronous sound as when the audience hear it they relate it to war. In their dialogue the tone of voice that is used is a shouting tone which can be heard over all of the background noise, this is a diegetic sound as it is a source on screen. The background noise is all of the military guns and machines this creates the effect of war and how chaotic it is.

Editing is also utilized in different manners to create effects which help to heighten the action. For example, editing is very slow-paced to create a tense atmosphere this is to the impact of war and what is going on. Slow-pacing was also used to show how new it was for William Cage as he was overwhelmed by the war situation as he has never done it before. The editing then speeds up and cross-cutting is used frequently to help to bring together the characters in an imminent fight-scene and the fast editing builds-up to the action, heightening tension.

Mise-en-scène is used when William is forced to dress in a distinctive costume, this costume has machinery attached which are guns this is unfamiliar to William this is shown by his facial expression and him trying to ask for help from his pears but being completely ignored. The conventional set-design of a war on a beach creates the effect of action and how bad the weather was with all the crashing wave sound effects. The props also mainly consist of weapons which creates the genre of action. Lighting is dim and murky simply to create the effect of a storm on the beach.

Camera devices are extensively used to construct ideals and create effects. For example, a high-angle shot is used from the air craft, which they are all strapped into, over the war that is happening on the beach. In addition, many mid-shots and close-up shots are utilised before the action to portray the characters’ fear. When they come down from the air craft a point of view shot is used as one of the men hits the ground and starts to celebrate but gets hit by another aircraft. It is a point of view shot because William is watching it happen.

TV Comedy Exam Questions

Compare how and why two programmes were scheduled on different channels.

Bad Education is scheduled on BBC this is different to Friday night dinner which is scheduled on channel 4 as the BBC can get away with more of the risky comedy then channel 4 this is because of the target audience of each TV broadcast and the budget they both have.

Both programmes have a high amount of Transgressive pleasure this shows why the two programmes are on late at night as the content is not for young eyes. Transgressive pleasure is seen as taboo in most peoples eyes this is why people like to watch it as its funny and things that people don't normally bring up in everyday life. It is almost cringe worthy yet funny this makes the audience watch on as they know the character well and know that what they are about to do will end badly and cringy but will be hilarious.

Bad Education is 30 minutes long whereas Friday night dinner is 23 minutes long this shows that each TV broadcast only puts risky comedy on for not that long this shows that the BBC are aloud a longer time. This also shows approximately how long comedy TV shows are on in the UK.

The audiences that these programmes are aimed at are different yet similar as Bad Education has more of a teenage audience and fans of star of the programme Jack Whitehall, the programme is set in a school with a range of stereo-types, teenagers like this because they can almost relate even though they are over exaggerated. Friday night dinner has a family audience as it's on a Friday at dinner time where most families sit down to watch TV  although this is the case because of the humor and the cast member Simon Bird, (who starred in the Inbetweeners) encourages a younger teenage audience which then relates to Bad Education.

Bad Education audience pleasures

Bad Education

Discuss in detail how one programme (Bad Education) offers audience pleasures. Give examples from the programme. [15 marks]

‘Bad Education’ is a comedy which is set in a high school; the comedy is set in the same location with the same characters. This lets the audience build a relationship between the characters. ‘Bad Education’ gives us audience gratification because of the stereotypes presented in the program. One stereotype presented is the ‘chav’ in the high school; this can be seen as a white guy in a hoody with a cap talking in slang.
Audience pleasures in ‘Bad Education’ are that you like ‘Mr Wickers’ because although he screws up and gets something’s wrong he is a likeable character. All the other teachers aren’t very likeable; ‘Fraser’ the headmaster is silly and completely unsuitable for the role. ‘Miss Goluver’ is a very sickly good character that you can’t really relate to as Mr Wickers has a good heart behind what he does therefore the audience like him and can sympathise with him no matter about his stupid choices, he makes it funny and predictable when the audience watches. He is like a teenager himself this is why young adults like him.

Jack Whitehall who plays ‘Mr Wickers’ is a British comedian loved by a pacific audience which is young adults and above. This is important because when his fans find out about a comedy he is in they are more likely to watch it because he is in it.
